summary

  • YouTube Premium subscribers can now test out the sleep timer for their videos.
  • Other experimental features include Dream Screen for YouTube Shorts and conversational AI that answers questions in videos.
  • Subscribers will have the chance to receive a gift card as a “thank you” for providing feedback on the experimental feature.

YouTube Premium is an add-on service that has always tried to justify its existence with perks like removing ads and picture-in-picture functionality. Needless to say, most of the benefits of this subscription service come from YouTube Music, which replaced Google Play Music a few years ago. YouTube Premium isn't the worst subscription in the world, and I think it's worth subscribing to for certain people. Subscribers get access to YouTube's less talked about experimental features page, which allows eligible premium members to test tools in development, like the newly added sleep timer.

Kick back and unwind with your favorite tunes and podcasts

If you head to YouTube's experimental features page (which is accessible to non-subscribers), you'll see the new sleep timer listed. Similar to the YouTube Music sleep timer, users can opt in and set a specific time for playback to pause. The feature doesn't appear in accounts yet, but YouTube says it will be accessible from the video's settings menu. The feature will be available until September 2nd, after which it will be removed and may be added back at a later date.

Other Lab Experiments

YouTube is frequently updating its testbed of experiments, and users can now access other features in addition to the sleep timer if they subscribe to Premium. Dream Screen, available until August 20, lets users use AI to create their own green screen backgrounds when creating YouTube Shorts. Further experimental features incorporate conversational AI to answer questions about the video users are watching. Available until August 21, YouTube says “quality and accuracy may vary.”

Those who opt in to these experimental features are what we'll call beta testers for lack of a better term, so Google is looking for their opinions and feedback. Most participants who sign up and are selected to participate in the research sessions will receive a gift card as a “thank you” for their time. Not all of the experimental features have been well-received. YouTube redesigned its video watch page in June, but it faced heavy criticism until July 1st. At least Google and YouTube are listening to their users' opinions when redesigning their video watch pages. dislike Product (see what we did there?).
