Would the Borderlands movie have been better with Uwe Boll at the helm? Well, he seems to think so.

Eli Roth's recent film adaptation of Borderlands hasn't exactly had the best of openings. Prior to its release, critics around the world shared disparaging reviews of the adaptation, with phrases like “disaster” and “lifeless, unfunny, and visually repulsive” being bandied about.

And then the movie came out and, well, things didn't get much better. The Cate Blanchette-starring adaptation only made $4 million on its opening day, a disappointing result that looks set to make the film a commercial flop.

In fact, Borderlands was such a flop that now even director Uwe Boll, who previously directed it, That His adaptation of Alone in the Dark, which earned him nominations for not one but two “Worst Director” awards (he won one), is dealing him a serious blow.

As spotted by PC Gamer, earlier this week Boll shared an infographic from IGN's social media account detailing Borderlands' opening weekend sales figures. He captioned the image, “Ha ha. My movies were rated R and made more money than this. Now you wish I was directing.”

One commentator was quick to criticize Boll for his claim that his films had outgrossed Borderlands, noting that Alone on the Dark opened with $2.8 million, with a final gross of $12.6 million. House of the Dead, meanwhile, opened with $5.5 million, with a final gross of $13.8 million, and Bloodrayne opened with $1.5 million, with a final gross of $3.6 million. Those numbers certainly didn't set the film industry alight.

Boll then tried to explain that his films actually made more money from illegal downloads (his films have apparently been downloaded illegally 41 billion times). I have no idea how accurate that is, but it's a statement.

Regardless, this attack on Borderlands from a man who made one of the most widely regarded worst films of all time has to hurt.

As for Borderlands, Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick has asked fans to give the film a chance. Meanwhile, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford said he has “blocked over a dozen accounts” on X for being “really mean” about the film.

Earlier this year, he was a little more optimistic about the whole transition from video games to the big screen thing, calling the Borderlands movie the start of a “Borderlands Cinematic Universe” back in February.

Maybe Uwe Boll will follow up on his joke and sign on to direct the sequel? Hmm, yeah, I'm not sure about that either.
