WhatApp: How to use the secret code feature

WhatsApp has introduced a chat lock feature on iPhones and high-end and budget Android smartphones to make conversations more private. How to set the secret code

Before setting the secret code, you need to lock the chat on WhatsApp. Once that's done, here's how to set up your code:

Limitations of WhatsApp's secret code feature

WhatsApp secret codes provide an extra layer of privacy. However, there are some limitations. First, you have to enter a code every time you view a locked chat, which makes it difficult to access. This can be inconvenient if you frequently access locked chat folders.

Additionally, if someone knows your code, they can bypass this layer of security. For this reason, it is best to use other security measures such as two-factor authentication. Another limitation is that if you forget your secret code, you will have to clear all locked chats to access the chat window, potentially losing any data you haven't backed up.

What to do if you forget your secret code

WhatsApp recommends choosing a memorable secret code so you don't forget it. However, if this happens, you can unlock it by unlocking and clearing the locked chat. To do this, go to setting > privacy > chat lock > Unlock and clear locked chats.

You can restore unlocked and cleared chats if you took a last backup before clearing them. However, chats that you clear after a backup are usually lost.

If you primarily use the WhatsApp app on your mobile device, locking your chats by setting a secret code is a great option. If you use WhatsApp on your desktop or laptop, you won't be able to use the secret code or chat lock features. However, you can archive your chats on WhatsApp's web platform to reduce visibility. Archived chats are still accessible, but they're invisible and harder to find.
