Valve's hero shooter Deadlock hasn't been announced yet, but it had 16,000 concurrent players on Steam this weekend

Deadlock, a game that has yet to be officially announced in any way, shape or form, saw a peak of over 16,000 concurrent players this weekend.

At the time of writing, the game has a peak player count of 16,947 on Steam, with 4,714 people playing the game at this very moment.

I just tried to install it myself via a little tab on SteamDB, but I got this message: “An error occurred while launching the game: Game configuration not available.” I was then taken back to the main Steam app page.

So what exactly is Deadlock? Well, it's Valve's hero shooter. But, as I said, the Half-Life creator hasn't confirmed that it exists, let alone is in any form of playable state.

Leaked details of Deadlock began to surface earlier this year via images posted to social media, along with a report from longtime Valve reporter Tyler McVicker. This report claimed that Deadlock was an Overwatch-style third-person shooter, with closed-end testing underway.

McVicker described the project as having elements inspired by MOBAs and tower defense. It's “like if Valorant, Overwatch, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 had a baby,” the reporter said in May.

Later that month, gameplay footage of the sci-fi shooter also leaked. This footage in particular showed Deadlock's training mode, some of its heroic characters, and the existence of BioShock Infinite-style skyrails that players can attach to and ride.

Most recently, in June, Valve filed for the trademark Deadlock, with the intention of covering several categories including (but not limited to) online video game delivery and video game education.

Hopefully we'll hear something more concrete and official about Deadlock soon. Eurogamer will keep you posted as soon as we learn more.
