Chromecast with Google TV (4K)
The number of streaming devices available on the market is a huge plus for consumers; however, the downside is that it can be difficult to decide which option is best for your needs. If you’re shopping for a device in 2024, here are the best streaming devices you should consider buying.
1 Amazon Fire Stick 4K Max
Among Amazon’s Fire TV Stick lineup, the best option to buy is the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. This model is the most expensive in the lineup, but given its price, we recommend it as it offers the best value for money on a Fire TV Stick. Starting with the basics, it has a 2.0GHz processor paired with 2GB of memory, so it offers better performance than you’ll find on other models.
The available storage is 16GB, which isn’t the largest you’ll find on a streaming device. However, at the time of writing, this is the most storage you’ll get on any Fire TV Stick, so that shouldn’t be a problem. It also includes the Fire TV Ambient Experience, which is exclusive to Amazon’s Omni TV lineup.
The third standout feature of this model is support for cloud gaming via Amazon Luna or Xbox Cloud Gaming. To support gaming, the device also has a special mode, called Game Mode, to reduce lag while playing games.
2 Walmart Ontario. Google TV 4K Pro
If you’re looking for the best Google TV streaming device, get the onn. Google TV 4K Pro. I’ve previously discussed why you should get the onn. Google TV 4K Pro streaming device from Walmart, and for good reason. It has great hardware that rivals even some of the more powerful options on this list. For starters, the device includes 32GB of storage and 3GB of memory paired with a quad-core Cortex-A55 CPU, making it without a doubt one of the best responsive Google TV devices.
Picture quality is also good, with support for 4K and various HDR formats like Dolby Vision. The included remote is also versatile, with all the standard buttons plus a customizable one. This remote also has a hidden trick that you won’t find anywhere else for cheap – it includes a function to help you find it if you lose it. You can find it simply by asking Google Assistant or pressing the front button on the box.
This is the best option if you're looking for a Google TV-powered streaming device that offers more than you get on any Chromecast device.
3 Apple TV 4K
The Apple TV 4K is the ultimate in the Apple ecosystem, and it’s earned our praise as one of the best media streamers on the market. The third-generation Apple TV 4K model released in 2022 is still a solid choice for a streaming device in 2024 due to its powerful A15 Bionic processor (the same one that powers the iPhone 13 series).
This chip is paired with 4GB of faster LPDDR4 memory, making opening apps and navigating the Apple TV 4K a breeze. The device isn’t lacking in the storage department, either, as it comes with either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Additionally, there are other new features in the third-generation Apple TV 4K that you’ll love.
But most importantly, Apple TV is best used within its own ecosystem. So, if you have other Apple devices like AirPods Max, iPhone, iPad, and AirPods Pro, you’ll get the most out of Apple TV because of its tight integration with the Apple ecosystem. This makes Apple TV the best option if you already have other Apple devices.
The Apple TV 4K comes in two versions. The Wi-Fi-only Apple TV 4K offers 64GB of storage, while the Wi-Fi + Ethernet Apple TV 4K offers 128GB of storage.
4 Roku 4K Streaming Stick
This is the best streaming device that runs Roku OS. One of the key features of the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is Dolby Vision support, which was missing from previous models. HDR10 and HDR10+ are also available, ensuring better picture quality with compatible TVs and content.
The device has 16GB of storage, and it’s unfortunate that Roku doesn’t mention its memory in the official specifications. In terms of content, Roku OS is one of the best smart TV operating systems, with a rich library of apps available for download. And with a vast library of live TV channels, you can watch local TV channels on Roku for free.
While the included remote includes a voice assistant, it lacks the lost remote finder feature that’s exclusive to the more expensive Roku Ultra. In the grand scheme of things, that doesn’t matter. At under $50, it offers the best value for money among Roku OS streaming devices.
5 Chromecast with Google TV (4K)
The Chromecast 4K with Google TV is the best Chromecast on the market. Plus, if you’re not ready to shell out for the Google TV 4K Pro from Walmart, get the Chromecast 4K with Google TV from Google instead. In our Chromecast with Google TV review back in 2020, when the device launched, we gave it a perfect 9/10. A lot has changed since then, but it’s still the best option if you need a Chromecast.
You can watch HDR content in 4K resolution with all major supported formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. The sound quality is also excellent if you have compatible devices that support Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos (via HDMI). The device comes with a nifty remote that lets you control the device with your voice, powered by Google Assistant.
There are a lot of options when it comes to buying a streaming device. If you want a Google TV-powered device, you can’t go wrong with the Google TV 4K Pro from Walmart. If you’d rather get a Google device instead, the 4K Chromecast with Google TV is your best bet. If you’re already in the Apple ecosystem, you’ll have a better experience with the Apple TV 4K.
On the other hand, get the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max if you need the best Fire TV Stick and the Roku Streaming Stick 4K for the best streaming device for the price from Roku. We've listed the best options so far, but if you're not sure which one to pick and why, the key factors to consider when choosing a streaming device should give you more guidance.
