Key points
- You can use many habit tracking apps to monitor the habits you want to build and break.
- Examples of apps to try include Habitica and Davetech's Habit Tracker.
- Focus on habit trackers that are easy to use to reduce daily friction.
When I started my self-improvement journey in 2019, there were a handful of apps that made it easy to track habits like going to the gym. These apps also helped me stay accountable. If you’re looking to make small, regular adjustments to your daily life, these apps will help.
1 Habitica: Best for Gaming
One of the best ways to stick to a habit is to realize that life is like a video game that you’re actually playing. And since Habitica makes the habit tracking experience more fun, it’s one of the best apps you can use to make lasting changes.
The Habitica app lets you set up a positive habit tracker (like walking 10,000 steps a day) or a negative habit tracker (like skipping coffee in the afternoon). You can change the category via tags and set the difficulty level.
With Habitica, you can reset the counter for any of your habits. You can also add notes that you think would be useful to record. At the top of the main screen, you'll see health and experience bars—along with your playing level. Levels advance as you achieve goals.
Once you collect enough points, you can buy different things with your token. It's one of the many wellness apps that turns self-care into a game.

2 Super Habit: Best for iOS Users
If you’re looking for a less fun version of the Habitica app, I recommend trying this habit tracker instead. You can enter the name of your habit and choose how many days per week you want to complete it. For example, I aim to exercise four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday).
When using this habit tracker, you can also choose a start date. You can also choose how many reminders you want to see and what day you want your calendar week to start on.
For more customization, you can customize the color of your habit tracker. For a complete overview of your history, you can see your progress for the current month and year. Most of the features within the app are free, but you can upgrade to a paid subscription or get a lifetime purchase for unlimited habits.

3 Habit Tracker App: Best for Ease of Use
Davetech’s Habit Tracker app has a simplified user interface with several templates, such as breathing exercises, reading books, eating vegetables, and reviewing your day. In each of these templates, you can choose specific goal periods and whether you want to build them up or stop.
The Habit Tracker app lets you change the icon for each of your habits, making it easier to navigate between them. Additionally, you can customize the type of chart and choose whether it's suitable for morning, afternoon, or evening.
Some of the available habit templates for “quitting smoking” include drinking less alcohol, complaining less, and not spending too much time playing video games. You can create your own habits if you don’t want to use any of the templates.
The Habit Tracker app lets you see the status of your habits based on whether or not you've stuck to them. You can also track how you're feeling, which can help you find patterns when you're keeping up with or skipping your habits.

4 Habitify App: Best for Visualizing Throughout the Day
The Habitify app lets you choose from five basic habits, including drinking water and practicing yoga. You can also add your own habits later. The app lets you choose how often you want to repeat these habits, and you can set daily goals for how long you want them to last.
Habitify helps you organize everything by creating different zones. So, if you’re looking to organize your household or simply keep track of what’s going on in your life, it’s a great option. For each zone, you can edit the name and choose a different color as well.
If you want to challenge yourself, you will find many challenges to participate in. They are divided on a daily and monthly basis, and you will also find many subcategories to explore more specific challenges.
The Habitify app has comprehensive statistics that give you an overview of your habits, you can see which habits you have completed and ignored, as well as which habits you have partially completed.

You have to pay $5.99 for Streaks, but you get lifetime access to it, and it’s a very comprehensive app. So if you want to take tracking your habits seriously, it might be worth considering.
The Streaks app lets you track a variety of habits, such as walking your dog and reducing your daily sugar intake. You’ll also find options for reading, learning a new language, organizing your home, and more. The Streaks app integrates with the Health app, which means you can track different aspects of your health and wellness, such as increasing or decreasing your calorie intake.
To confirm that you've completed your daily habits, simply tap and hold the icon. You'll see all your habits in the same place on your home screen.

6 Lifestyle: The best way to write down your habits
Way of Life is a simple habit tracker app that lets you choose whether you’ve completed a habit by tapping on the checkmark icon. You can also add notes for each habit you want to track, and it’s also possible to take notes within the app. So, you might want to consider using it if you’re also looking for a small note-taking app.
The Way of Life app lets you look at trends over long periods of time via a graph or pie chart, meaning you can see if you’re on track. You can also set daily reminders to make sure you complete your habit each day.
When using Way of Life, you can enable password protection if you don't want others to see what you're doing.
