Developer RageSquid has unveiled Descenders Next, an extreme sports-focused sequel of sorts to 2018’s acclaimed downhill bike hit Descenders, which aims to be “the only extreme sports game you’ll ever need” on Steam and Game Pass in 2025.
The original Descenders was all about exhilarating mountain biking in a procedurally generated world. Descenders Next, however, is doing something a little different, expanding its scope to include as many extreme sports as possible in the coming years.
As announced, RageSquid's goal with Descenders Next is to capture “the same feeling, the same sense of speed” as its predecessor, but across multiple disciplines, starting with snowboard sports at launch.
“Players will learn to conquer snowy peaks through tight, effortless snowboarding action,” the studio explains, “before moving onto mountainous terrain with the more aggressive feel of mountainboarding. Each sport will have a completely different feel and handling than the others, meaning players will have to learn to navigate and master every nook and cranny of Next.”
All of this takes place on procedurally created off-piste mountains that chain together in “tight, twisting parks and vistas,” where players can attempt speed challenges, trick-focused challenges, and even treasure hunts. There’s talk of “multiple massive biomes,” as well as full multiplayer support, and players can earn reputation used to purchase new boards, kits, helmets, goggles, and more as they play. RageSquid even promises a “popping” soundtrack from Monstercat.
In anticipation of Descenders Next’s release in 2025, RageSquid will be hosting a series of online hands-on sessions throughout the year, and interested parties can sign up via the game’s website.
