summary

  • The August 2024 security patch for the Samsung Galaxy S24 has been released, but it only fixes security vulnerabilities.
  • Leaker Ice Universe claims that Samsung has delayed the One UI 6.1.1 update for the Galaxy S24 series.
  • The August security patch has also been applied to the Galaxy S23 in the US.

For the past few months, Galaxy S24 owners have been anxiously awaiting a major camera-focused update to improve the phone's imaging capabilities. Rumors suggest that the One UI 6.1.1 update could be released in August following the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6. Although a new firmware has been released for Samsung's 2024 flagships, it doesn't include much else besides the August 2024 security patch.

Samsung's latest phablet feels like a do-over

Galaxy S24 users on the AT&T network in the US are reporting receiving the AXFJ firmware. The build's release notes and its relatively small 467.93MB size reveal that it doesn't contain any major changes other than security patches being delayed to August 2024.

Well-known Samsung leaker Ice Universe also posted on X that the One UI 6.1.1 update for the Galaxy S24 series may be delayed. He noted that the firmware seems to be ready for release, but the reason for the delay is unclear. Unfortunately, this means that Galaxy S24 owners now have even longer to wait for the big camera-focused update.

In addition to the Galaxy S24, the August 2024 security patch is also being rolled out to unlocked Galaxy S23 units in the U.S. The 420MB update is expected to roll out to other carriers and more regions around the world in the coming weeks.

Samsung's August 2024 update will fix several critical security vulnerabilities

Samsung has already published its August 2024 security bulletin highlighting the changes it has fixed in the update. In addition to fixing Android-specific vulnerabilities, the update also fixes 14 security issues related to Samsung devices, including 10 with a medium severity rating and three with a high severity rating.

One “critical” vulnerability is related to improper input validation in librtp.so, which could have allowed “remote attackers to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges,” although user interaction was required for hackers to exploit the vulnerability. This serious security issue was privately disclosed to Samsung in early June.

This security issue affects all Samsung devices running Android 12, 13, and 14, so be sure to update your phone as soon as the August 2024 security patch is available.
