Sony has sold more than 61 million PlayStation 5 consoles, but hardware unit sales fell 32 percent year-over-year.

The company released its latest financial report today, revealing that 2.4 million PS5 consoles were sold in the most recent quarter. That compares to 3.3 million in the same quarter of 2023 (and 4.5 million in the previous quarter).

However, Sony saw an overall 12 percent increase in gaming revenue year-over-year, resulting in a 33 percent increase in profits.

This increase can be attributed to both an 18 percent increase in software revenue year-over-year and a 25 percent increase in network services revenue, primarily PS Plus.

While Sony doesn’t disclose PS Plus subscriber numbers, it does disclose monthly active users on PlayStation Network. There are now 116 million users, up from 108 million year-over-year, but down from 118 million last quarter.

However, software sales actually declined 5% year-over-year, with the increase in revenue and profits perhaps due to higher game prices.

The last quarter saw the release of the PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade, which developer ShiftUp says had sold one million copies by the end of June.

Other notable releases include Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut for PC and the Destiny 2 expansion The Final Shape.

By comparison, Nintendo sold 2.1 million Switch consoles over the same period. So while Sony is selling more PS5 units, the Switch is just behind in its seventh year of release.

Microsoft, meanwhile, saw a similar decline in hardware sales in the previous quarter, a 42 percent decline. Overall, then, hardware sales are declining.
