The OnePlus Open was one of our favorite foldable phones coming in 2023. This year saw more powerful offerings from Samsung and Chinese manufacturers, but the OnePlus Open still holds its own. While it looks like there won't be a successor to the OnePlus Open this year, the company is trying to keep the Open in the spotlight with a new special edition. A new version of the OnePlus Open (dubbed the Apex Edition), teased in bright red last week, has now been officially announced.

OnePlus gives Samsung the competition it needs
It's common for smartphone manufacturers to launch limited or special edition smartphones with special colours or large storage capacities to generate buzz, and the OnePlus Open Apex Edition is no different. The main highlight is a stunning red colour that OnePlus calls Crimson Shadow. The red back is made of vegan leather and the Alert Slider comes with orange accents.
Under the hood, the OnePlus Open Apex Edition is packed with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip and 16GB LPDDR5X RAM as the standard model, but this one also bumps up the storage capacity to a whopping 1TB, ensuring you've got the space you need for your favorite Android apps and games.
The OnePlus Open Apex Edition is equipped with a VIP mode that is linked to a dedicated security chip.
OnePlus says the Open Apex Edition comes with a CC EAL5+ certified “independent security chip” for added security. The OnePlus Open has had this chip since launch, but the company is improving it with this release. OnePlus says the chip will continue to help protect files and personal information on the phone from malicious attacks, but the Apex Edition ties the security chip to a new VIP mode that can be activated using the alert slider.
Enabling this mode will “lock down the security chip” and severely limit ad tracking, as well as turn off all of your phone's microphones and cameras to stop apps from spying on you.
Other notable additions to the OnePlus Apex Edition are AI-powered features like AI Eraser and AI Smart Cutout. The former is OnePlus' take on Google's Magic Eraser, which lets you erase unwanted objects from your photos, while Smart Cutout lets you isolate subjects from an image so you can create custom stickers or save them separately.
The OnePlus Open Apex Edition will be available in Europe on August 27. In the US, the limited edition foldable will be available from August 8 for $1,900. It will be available while supplies last, so if the red colour has caught your eye, grab it quick.
