The OnePlus Open is the company's first foldable smartphone, and it impressed us in almost every important aspect, making it one of our favorite foldables. The large display and square design make the phone easy to use, whether closed or open, and OxygenOS's excellent multitasking capabilities let you make the most of the large inner foldable screen and be more productive on the go.
OnePlus' foldable smartphone proved that Samsung has a lot of catching up to do in a segment where it was once the leader. The OnePlus Open was well-received, and there's a lot of excitement and buzz around its successor, the OnePlus Open 2. Here's everything we know about the OnePlus Open successor.
OnePlus Open 2: Design and specifications
Renders of the OnePlus Open 2 have been leaked but have yet to surface online. The smartphone's launch is likely a few months away so it remains to be seen when that will change. It remains to be seen whether the phone will undergo any major changes in appearance, especially as competitors are starting to lean towards it. The OnePlus 12 has adopted the same core design as the OnePlus 11 and the BBK-owned company will likely employ the same strategy with the Open 2.
There are some slight changes to the Hasselblad-branded camera island on the back, and it looks like there are some tweaks here and there. But the OnePlus Open 2 will likely keep the same design as the original model. That's not a reason to be disappointed. We loved the design of the original Open and it was comfortable to use. The foldable smartphone passed the JRE durability test and emerged as OnePlus' most durable smartphone.
We've heard that OnePlus plans to beef up the OnePlus Open 2's water resistance, making it at least as waterproof as the IP48 rating of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. According to the leak, OnePlus is planning on making the Open 2 the thinnest foldable smartphone in the US at launch, beating out the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.
According to the leak, OnePlus will skip the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and go with Gen 4 for the OnePlus Open 2. Given the rumored Spring 2025 release, Gen 4 makes more sense and will put it on par with other flagships releasing next year. The OnePlus Open 2 is also expected to come with 12GB or 16GB of RAM, which is plenty of power for multitasking. The OnePlus Open comes with a bright cover and a foldable screen. For the OnePlus Open 2, the company is likely to source new panels from suppliers with higher peak brightness and better efficiency.
Many OnePlus Open owners have had reliability issues with the phone's inner folding screen, with dead pixels and green lines appearing randomly. Here's hoping OnePlus uses a more reliable panel without these issues in its next folding phone.
The OnePlus Open specs don't include wireless charging, but since the OnePlus 12 does have wireless charging, it's possible that OnePlus will add this convenient charging method to its second foldable device. We've heard rumors that the OnePlus 13 may drop wireless charging again, but it's reasonable to assume that the device will have wireless charging around 2024.
According to reports, OnePlus will be incorporating its Glacier Battery technology into the OnePlus Open 2, with a nearly 6,000mAh cell. This is a significant increase in size, which is expected to help the OnePlus Open 2 surpass other foldable phones in terms of battery life.
OnePlus Open 2: Software
In addition to great hardware, the OnePlus Open was a joy to use thanks to some changes to OxygenOS. With any luck, the OnePlus Open 2 might kick it up a notch. After a longer-than-expected delay, Android 14 arrived on the original Open in March 2024, and we were pleasantly surprised by how much it changed the user experience. From new features like a files dock to improved ways to extract text and images, OxygenOS 14 has a lot to offer, all of which will come by default on the Open 2.
The OnePlus Open 2 will also have AI capabilities, though details are scarce. The company recently announced a Magic Eraser clone for existing hardware and has promised additional tools in the future. Expect AI to become even more of a focus for OnePlus as 2024 approaches.
Longer software support would help the Open 2 stand out from other foldables. Google raised the bar with the Google Pixel 8 in 2023, promising seven years of OS and security updates, and Samsung has responded. That's three years more OS updates than the OnePlus Open. OnePlus doesn't need to beat the update schedule Google promised for its second foldable; all it needs to do is match it. I can't see OnePlus extending support that far; the brand has always lagged behind in this regard.
OnePlus Open 2: Camera
Despite not having the biggest camera sensor, the OnePlus Open had the best camera of any foldable smartphone when it launched, meaning you could take great photos without compromising on the big display. It did have some processing issues, but OnePlus quickly resolved them with a software update.
We don't know the full picture, but we've heard that OnePlus will equip the OnePlus Open 2 with a 50MP primary sensor, but the exact specs of the other lenses are unknown. The addition of AI could be even more useful, as it will allow the phone to tweak color, contrast, and processing based on the scene you're trying to capture.
OnePlus Open 2: Price and release date
The OnePlus Open debuted in late October 2023 after several months of apparent delays related to display sourcing. It would have been great to see a successor this year, but leaks suggest the OnePlus Open 2 will be released in March 2025.
When it comes to pricing, OnePlus has always been aggressive, often pricing its products slightly lower than the competition. While we won't know for sure for a while, we expect the OnePlus Open 2 to be priced slightly lower than the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, especially since Samsung and Google have both priced their foldable phones very highly this year.
OnePlus Open 2 could face tough competition from Samsung
The OnePlus Open 2 will face some stiff competition when it launches in early 2025. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Z Fold 7 sometime in the summer, and Google will have some lead time to improve on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Either way, if OnePlus performs as well as the original Open, the Open 2 will likely be the top foldable phone again in 2025.
