What is the best free AI portrait generator?
Does the idea of taking professional headshots without paying for a photoshoot sound too good to be true? Well, I decided to test it out, and these are my top recommendations for an AI image generator.
LightX’s results didn’t disappoint, but I wasn’t impressed either. On the home page you’ll find a selection of AI tools – choose AI Headshot Generator. LightX will prompt you to import an image from your device and then take you to the generation window.
On the left panel, you can choose from a variety of headshot presets, including corporate, outdoor, office, and professional. You can also use the prompt tool to give the generator something more specific to work with. Click “Generate” at the bottom and wait for your results.
I tried four of the presets and wasn't very happy with them. The preset with the green jacket made my neck look very small, which looks very strange, and the preset with the gray shirt looks very unnatural because of the lack of wrinkles. In my opinion, the image with the gray jacket and black shirt is the best, although it added some masculine features that weren't there before.
I decided to try the Stimulate tool instead, which gave me much better results. The shirts had more natural-looking folds, and it kept my neck proportionate to my head. At first glance, these two shots look pretty good, but they still look like they were created by AI to me. You can download your images for free with a watermark, which you can easily crop out.
You can sign up for LightX for free and get 10 coins every day – each headshot creation costs 1 coin, and there are other AI tools you can use as well, including an avatar generator, background remover, and AI expander. Even if the results exceed my expectations, I wouldn’t recommend getting a subscription, just spend your daily coins wisely.
AI Ease headshot generator lives up to its name; it's very easy to use. It doesn't have the customization options that LightX does, but since it's a free tool with good results, I have no complaints.
On the avatar generator homepage, you can choose between Professional or Creative mode — I chose Professional mode. You’ll be prompted to sign up for free at this point if you haven’t already, and then it’s time to upload your photo. Just like LightX, it only requires one photo, which is convenient but also means the results may not be very realistic, so choose a photo that best highlights your features.
On the next page, you'll be asked to select “male” or “female.” I decided to try both to see how each would look in my photo. The “male” option had me cut my hair short and wear some nice suits and ties, but it did something weird to my eyebrows—they looked like they were painted on. You may also have to try a few times to get a hairstyle you like.
Aside from this, I like the overall results, and you can download your images without a watermark.
The “female” option was a bit disappointing because it changed everything about my features. It gave me long hair, earrings, and makeup. This might be a good option if you already have those features in your photo, but it’s a bit of a headshot generator in my opinion. For example, if you have short hair and like to wear earrings and makeup, you’ll have to settle for a new long hairstyle using the “female” filter.
AI Ease is a good tool for creating avatars if your photo already fits into the clear gender norms. If not, it's best to skip it.
Vidnoz is similar to AI Ease in that it changes your hair and features based on the filter you choose, but it offers more customization and produces good results. First, sign up for free, then upload a photo of yourself from your device.
Then you have to select a male or female filter and choose a style – there are eight styles in total. Since this is a professional image generator, all the styles include professional clothing and hairstyles, but I like to have at least some variety. I again tried both the male and female settings, and the same thing happened as with AI Ease.
The male option produced two good-looking headshots; my face looks good, the image doesn't have a lot of AI cues, and the suits look great.
The feminine option completely ignored my short hair and decided I needed lipstick and earrings. Again, this might be a good option if you're looking for those features, but I'm not a fan.
I wondered if the male filter would do the same thing with long hair (make it short) so I decided to try it with this image from Shutterstock. My suspicions were proven right, it removed this man’s golden locks. I also ran the original image through AI Ease and it did the same thing – goodbye long hair.
You can download the results in high quality and without watermark.
What is the best free AI portrait generator?
My first choice would be LightX, not because it necessarily produces the best photos, but because of all the other benefits. LightX has a text prompt feature, which means you’re not limited to filters that will completely change your look. It also gives you 10 coins to spend each day, which is much more generous than the vast majority of professional AI headshot tools.
Vidnoz and AI Ease produce good results, but if your photo doesn't already fit a certain gender profile, it probably won't work for you. In this case, it might be worth taking a headshot of your own.
Another free option you can try is PFP Maker. It’s not an AI selfie generator but a selfie maker, and it’s completely free, and you don’t even need to register. It replaces your background with more suitable options, so you’ll need to dress professionally and look presentable because it doesn’t change your appearance. You can also customize and edit the results.
If you’re looking for a completely free avatar generator with good results and some customization, LightX would be my top recommendation. But the other options here are worth checking out too – it’s definitely better than spending a fortune on an AI avatar generator before you know what you’re getting!
