With two new models up for pre-order, GoPro is offering even more variety to its small cameras. The most exciting thing about the Hero 13 Black are the accessories that come with it, but that excitement comes at a premium: you’ll be paying for them a la carte.
GoPro Hero 13 Adds Lenses and Magnets
Known for their portability and weather-proof durability, GoPro cameras have continued to evolve over the years, blending the kind of hardware you’d expect on a professional shoot with active outdoor scenarios. So it makes sense that the Hero 13 Black, one of the new models available for pre-order, offers adaptable accessories like a magnetic mount and three attachable lenses.
The magnetic latch is said to be strong enough to stay securely attached to a bag or jacket, even in extreme situations like skydiving, while also allowing for quick access if you want to remove it and handle it manually. That’s pretty big, as an accessible mount can be one of the most important factors in a wearable camera. Plus, since everyone loves magnets, the company has added an accessory called Contacto, which supports continuous power via a magnetic link.
In fact, the best things in life aren't usually free, so here are the prices of accessories for the Hero 13:
While almost all of these accessories will be available alongside the camera on September 10, the Anamorphic Lens Mod won't be released until 2025.
I’d say that’s a lot of “extras” to add to an already expensive camera body, which will cost $399 on its own. While there are cheaper GoPro alternatives out there, the cost in this case may actually be justified. The Hero 13 Black will share the same 8:7 sensor as its predecessor, but the newer model will have an advantage in battery life, slow-motion capability, and transfer speeds.
Small but powerful alternative
Don’t let the Hero 13 Black steal the show, though, because GoPro is also releasing a smaller version of it, a new Hero camera. The new Hero camera is 35 percent smaller than the Hero 13 Black, weighing just 86 grams. It can’t accommodate the Hero 13 Black’s custom magnetic attachments, but its portability and ability to shoot in 4K make it a promising cheaper option at $199.
While both cameras are available for pre-order now, the Hero camera won't ship until September 22.
While the Hero 13 Black is a bit of a scary price tag, I appreciate that GoPro is also offering a cheaper option. When it comes to lenses, buying new ones is never cheap. I was pleased to hear that some older lens models will actually work with the Hero 13 Black, like the Max Lens Mod, making the new model even more accessible. Most importantly, I’ll be interested to see how the magnetic mounts hold up — literally.
