Google Pixel 9 series has reserved RAM for Gemini AI tasks on the device

summary

  • Google's new Pixel 9 series comes with a portion of RAM dedicated to on-device AI processing, improving the performance of AI features.
  • All Pixel 9 models now come with more RAM than before, with the base model getting 12GB and the Pro model getting an upgrade to 16GB.
  • While the performance improvements are still being tested, the reserved RAM could speed up AI processing on your device, resulting in a better user experience.

After months of leaks and teasers, Google has officially unveiled the Pixel 9 series on August 13, 2024. Google's new flagship smartphone comes with an all-new design, upgraded cameras, a bigger battery, a more powerful and efficient Tensor G4 chipset, and several new AI features. However, to perform these Gemini AI tasks efficiently, Google appears to have reserved a portion of the Pixel 9 series' RAM exclusively for on-device AI processing.

Google's biggest mobile shakeup since Tensor is coming soon

All of Google's Pixel 9 series models come equipped with Gemini Nano to perform on-device AI processing. However, Android Authority reports that Google has dedicated a portion of the RAM on all Pixel 9 models to run the multimodal Gemini Nano. According to the report, Google says that this reserved RAM will help AI features (both old and new) like Pixel Screenshot and Add Me features run faster and smoother.

Google hasn't revealed the exact amount of RAM reserved.

However, Google has not revealed the exact amount of reserved RAM, but clarified that a portion of the RAM will be permanently allocated to AI-based tasks, and users will not be able to get this RAM back, even if they switch back to Google Assistant from the default Gemini Assistant.

Incidentally, all Pixel 9 models come with more RAM than before. The entry-level Pixel 8 only had 8GB of RAM, but the base Pixel 9 now comes with 12GB of RAM. Meanwhile, all Pro models, including the new Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and the all-new Pixel 9 Pro Fold, have been upgraded to 16GB of RAM. This increase in RAM is understandable given the new smartphone's focus on AI.

Finally, a truly compact Android flagship

While we can't comment on the performance gains of Google's new smartphone just yet (we're still testing units), we're excited to see if this reserved RAM speeds up AI processing on the device, which was (somewhat) slow on the previous generation. But if you want to try it out for yourself, now might be the perfect time: Google is currently offering some great pre-order offers on all Pixel 9 models.

The Pixel 9 is the most affordable of Google's 2024 flagship models and comes with key features like a 48MP ultra-wide camera, a 50MP main shooter, and an autofocus selfie camera. While it does make some compromises compared to the Pro model, it still offers good value for the price, with new Gemini AI features and a 2,700-nit Actua display.

It has the same dimensions as the standard Pixel 9, but packs in premium features like the Pixel 9 Pro XL, making it a standout among Google's high-end products.
