summary

  • Chrome version 129 drops support for macOS Catalina and requires macOS 11 or later.
  • This Chrome update was expected, as Catalina ended support two years ago.
  • Update to macOS 11 to access new Chrome features. Older Macs may require ChromeOS.

Google Chrome has been the most used web browser on desktop and mobile devices for over a decade. Despite its shortcomings and criticisms, Google is continuously working on improving the browser. For example, the browser also adds many new AI features and smarter tab management. However, Google cannot support all devices forever, so from time to time it drops support for older operating systems. This time, it's macOS Catalina.

A four-year long journey comes to an end

According to Google, Chrome will end support for macOS 10.15 Catalina after version 129, scheduled for release on September 17, 2024. Chrome version 129 requires macOS 11 or later, so the current Chrome version 128 will be the last version officially supported on Macs with macOS Catalina.

It's worth noting that macOS Catalina has been around for almost five years and reached its end of life (EoL) about two years ago, meaning it no longer receives security updates or support from Apple. Therefore, it's no surprise that Google would end support for this version of Chrome. According to Google, the current Chrome version will continue to work on Macs with macOS Catalina, but users of this operating system won't receive any further updates or new features.

To use the new version of Chrome on your Mac and access the new features, you'll need to update your Mac to the minimum supported version, macOS 11 (also known as macOS Big Sur) or later. To update from macOS Catalina, click the Apple icon in the top left, go to System Preferences, and select Software Update.

Note that not all Macs support macOS Big Sur, the version released after Catalina, because Apple dropped support for many models of the 2013 MacBook Pro and 2012 MacBook Air. You can see a list of Macs officially supported by macOS Big Sur, but you might have a Mac that supports a newer macOS version than Catalina.

If that's not the case, but you want to keep using Chrome on your old Mac, consider installing ChromeOS on your device. This lightweight OS not only lets you run the latest version of Chrome on your old Mac, it can also breathe new life into your Mac.
