Sony's PlayStation VR2 PC adapter goes on sale tomorrow, but before you rush out to buy one, I have to say that, in my experience, getting PS VR2 working on PC isn't as easy as it should be.
I was planning on posting a review on the site in time for launch, but it turns out that the PS VR2 Sense controllers are very unstable when it comes to Bluetooth connectivity. Even though I have the necessary Bluetooth adapter built into my PC, the constant connection drops meant that I couldn't even get past the initial setup process for the headset on my PC.
While waiting to hear back from Sony about my issues, I did some digging on the device’s support site and found this line of text hidden at the bottom, “Some Bluetooth® adapters may not be compatible with the PlayStation®VR2 PC adapter. For more information on Bluetooth® adapters, please visit the link below.”
That link takes you to a page that provides a list of four external Bluetooth adapters that have been “confirmed by SIE as of 2024-07-20, but operation is not guaranteed.” These adapters are the TP-Link UB500, Buffalo BSBT5D205BK, ASUS USB-BT500, and IO-DATA USB-BT50LE.
I have a TP-Link UB500 arriving from Amazon now, and it should arrive tomorrow, so hopefully my full coverage won't be delayed too much by this little bump in the road. In any case, I would strongly recommend purchasing a separate Bluetooth dongle if you plan on getting the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, unless you Want to experience an hour of frustration like the one I felt, of course.
While the Bluetooth issue surprised me, Sony has made it clear that you’ll need to purchase a separate DisplayPort 1.4 cable to connect the PS VR2 to your PC. One isn’t included in the PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter box, so if you don’t have a spare, picking up one of these cables along with one of the suggested Bluetooth dongles will save you a lot of time and frustration during the initial setup process.
Seriously, PS VR2 owners have waited long enough to play Half Life: Alyx on their headsets, so if you can, don’t delay the process any longer!
