The Borderlands film adaptation grossed just $4 million in 3,125 theaters on its opening day.

As Variety reports, despite increased ticket sales from Imax and “other large, luxury auditoriums,” the Hollywood cast is apparently not attractive enough for the $115 million production.

Variety notes that distributor Lionsgate “financially protected itself” and recouped 60 percent of its production costs through international pre-sales, but the film currently has the dubious honor of having the worst critical reviews of any film released this summer.

The Borderlands movie has, of course, been in the works for a long time. It was originally announced in 2015 before disappearing, and just when it seemed like the project was dead and buried, Gearbox re-announced it in February 2020, this time with Hostel director Eli Roth at the helm.

Subsequently, prominent actors such as Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Gershwin, Kevin Hart and Jack Black joined the project.

But then came the reviews and… well, as Matt summed up for us earlier this week, first impressions weren’t great, with critics calling the live-action film adaptation of Gearbox’s shooter everything from a “massive flop” to a “disaster.”

Since then, Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick has implored fans to give it a chance, and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has “blocked over a dozen accounts” on X for being “really mean” to the film.
