Apparently, you don't need a Samsung phone to use the Galaxy Ring.

One of the most anticipated smart devices this year is Samsung's first foray into the smart ring space. Galaxy Ring I got to try it out earlier this year and have been eagerly awaiting its release, and the company finally announced it a few weeks ago. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 .

Samsung has been heavily promoting the benefits of the Galaxy Ring when used with a Galaxy Watch Ultra or a Samsung smartphone. Samsung's media briefings say that some of the AI-based features require a Galaxy smartphone, and Samsung's store backs this up.

However, in fact this is not entirely true.

I think the Galaxy Ring is a smarter choice.

Using Galaxy Ring with non-Galaxy phones

Will it work with the new Motorola Razr Plus?

I love my Motorola Razr Plus, but unfortunately Motorola doesn't make a smart ring. If, like me, you're looking for the best smart ring available, you've likely set your sights on the Galaxy Ring. I'm currently wearing two Galaxy Rings for various tests, one of which I've paired with a non-Galaxy smartphone, and the results were as expected: there's little difference between using it with a Galaxy smartphone or a non-Galaxy smartphone.

In fact, during a week of testing, the sleep reports for the two rings were nearly identical, with the difference being due to the size of the ring and the finger it was worn on, rather than the Galaxy smartphone it was paired with.

However, this isn't surprising as Samsung has confirmed that most features work without any issues, but it was expected that the AI-based features would require a Galaxy smartphone.

So, do you need a Galaxy smartphone to take advantage of the AI features?

AI won't judge your phone choices

The Galaxy Ring comes with staple features from the Samsung Health ecosystem, including highly detailed sleep reports, active heart rate tracking, blood oxygen monitoring, and activity counting, plus two special features powered by Galaxy AI.

One of them is Energy Score, a new feature, at least for Samsung, that gives you a way to quantify how you're feeling. It combines many of the staple features of Samsung Health and gives you a number from 1 to 100 that indicates how prepared you are for the day. Oura Ring In my testing, both rings produced very similar scores.

The second AI feature is Wellness Tips. Samsung Health uses AI to provide tips on how to improve your health after learning about you, your body, and your habits. You would think you would need a Galaxy phone for this feature, but actually, you don't need a Galaxy phone for either AI feature.

When I started testing this, I expected that the Galaxy Ring size 10 paired with my Motorola Razr Plus wouldn't have the wellness tips or energy score features that use Galaxy AI.

After the first night, I was already receiving an energy score, and after a few days, Samsung Health also started giving me AI-powered wellness tips to help improve my underlying health. For the most part, everything worked as expected.

So, does the Galaxy Ring work perfectly on non-Galaxy phones?

Almost perfect, but with one caveat

Samsung Galaxy Ring close-up

Not at all. Here's one thing I noticed: the Galaxy Ring doesn't sync as well with my Motorola Razr Plus as it does with the Galaxy Z Fold 6. There were a few times when the Galaxy Ring paired with the Razr Plus was several hours behind, while the other ring paired with the Z Fold 6 was up to date more often.

We tested the same ring with a OnePlus 12 and got the same results, so we think this is a benefit of using products from the same ecosystem. That said, we don't think this is a big enough issue to suggest that you should use a Galaxy phone with the Galaxy Ring, but rather that you should be careful when using the Galaxy Ring with a non-Galaxy phone.

Is a Galaxy Ring worth buying?

If you're looking for a smart ring, look no further

As I said in my Galaxy Ring review, it's a surprisingly polished experience and is the de facto smart ring for Android devices, and in my own testing I came to the same conclusion that it doesn't feel like a first-gen smart ring and Samsung has nailed the overall smart ring experience.

Battery life was especially notable: The correctly sized Galaxy Ring I have on my index finger (size 12) is currently eight days from a full charge and has 8% charge left, meaning it should last about nine days, which is much better than the maximum seven days of battery life that Samsung promises.

That said, the smaller size rings are rated for up to six days, and my size 10 ring lasted five days and 19 hours, so battery life will vary depending on your activity and usage. The Galaxy Ring also comes with a portable charging case that offers up to 1.5 times the battery life, so it should last at least two weeks on a single charge.

The Galaxy Ring is one of the sleeker first-gen products I've tried in a long time, and if you're interested in a smart ring, there's little reason not to buy one, especially since it works with any Android phone. Combined with a great feature set, this is a great buy. Best Smart Ring Available to buy now.
